buy nothing day – november 28th/29th
Nov 27th, 2008 by admin
Suddenly, we ran out of money and, to avoid collapse, we quickly pumped liquidity back into the system. But behind our financial crisis a much more ominous crisis looms: we are running out of nature… fish, forests, fresh water, minerals, soil. What are we going to do when supplies of these vital resources run low?
There’s only one way to avoid the collapse of this human experiment of ours on Planet Earth: we have to consume less.
It will take a massive mindshift. You can start the ball rolling by buying nothing on November 28th. Then celebrate Christmas differently this year, and make a New Year’s resolution to change your lifestyle in 2009.
It’s now or never!
November 28th is Buy Nothing Day in USA, while internationally it’s Saturday 29th November.
As a one-off consumerism-free day it will have very little impact on the devastation being done to the planet by our economic system, but as a day to promote the concept of buying nothing, and to encourage people to think about their purchases, its a wonderful idea.
Events are being held all over the world, to push the understanding that shopping has an ecological impact, and that shopping should not be a recreation, that we should all be seeking to make & grow as much of our necessities as we can, while buying as little & as ethically as we can.
Adbusters have a Buy Nothing Day Wiki, to help activists find one another.
In the Uk, information about Buy Nothing Day.
There is an international website for Buy Nothing Day too.

Take a look, find out if anyone is holding a culture-jamming event in your area, and why not go along to help? If nothing else, you are likely to meet other people who question the reality of work, buy, consume, die…. and it should be good fun too!
